About this guideUse the external Save Explorer as a read-only map reference, keep an untouched backup, and verify every decoded layer in the current game.

What it is for

The Save Explorer is a community tool for opening a local Sandustry .save file and viewing a read-only map. It is useful when you need to locate a factory area, inspect a cell, or compare layers without launching the game. It is a viewer, not a save editor, repair tool, or gameplay simulator.

Open the Sandustry Tools homepage and choose Save Explorer inside the app. The GitHub Pages deployment may return a 404 when a deep route such as /explorer is opened directly, so the homepage is the reliable entry point. You can also return to the local Community tools directory.

Privacy and backups

The upstream tool is designed to process the selected file in the browser and does not require an account or a normal upload workflow. That is a design description, not a guarantee about every future build: use it only on a device and browser you trust, and avoid opening a save that contains information you do not want exposed on a shared machine.

Keep an untouched copy of the .save file before viewing it. If the tool offers a remember option, treat browser storage as another copy of the save and clear it when you finish. Closing a tab is not a substitute for a backup or for checking what a browser has retained.

Version and decoding limits

The upstream project marks the explorer as work in progress. Some layers, colors, structures, or newer save data may be missing, misread, or unavailable. A blank region is not evidence that the game area is empty, and a rendered color is not proof of the current material state. Re-open the original save in Sandustry before changing or deleting anything.

For Blueprint strings, use the Blueprint Inspector or Blueprint Codec page instead. For a visual gallery without save files, see SandPrints.
